"Sumptuously packaged along with full texts (in both German and English).., like the rest of this incredible series, comes with the very highest recommendation" - HMV Choice

This second special single-cd release for Christmas in the award-winning series of recordings from the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, includes BWV 151 Süsser Trost, mein Jesus kömmt, one of his most intimate cantatas. Opening with a hauntingly beautiful and consoling soprano aria, it has pre-echoes of both Gluck and Brahms. First heard on Boxing Day 1725, BWV 57 Selig ist der Mann provides us with another opportunity to enjoy Bach, who never wrote an opera, as the best writer of dramatic declamation since Monteverdi. His response to the text is highly personalised, and sparing in its modest forces although strongly expressive. A movement of infectious rhythmic élan, the opening chorus of BWV 133 Ich freue mich in dir conveys the exuberance and sheer exhilaration of Christmas. The Monteverdi Choir and The English Baroque Solists give their customary brilliant performances, making this release the must-have issue of the Christmas season.
