Bach Motets concert at the Proms (30 Jul 2009)

The late evening Prom was a winner. John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir returned to four of the Bach motets that they performed at last year’s Spitalfields Winter Festival. This is music Gardiner has known since he was six and first performed at the Proms nearly 40 years ago, so perhaps it is not surprising that the motets glowed with a richness of expression that seemed to go fathoms deep. Another lifetime could easily pass before one heard them performed as memorably as this.
